The vertical form fill and seal machine, VFFS, is one of the most flexible machines in the packaging industry. It is relatively easy to operate and maintain but the latter is very important for trouble-free operation. In principle, the machine produces pillow pack bags for many product types. The bag is produced from a continuous flat roll of film, by wrapping it around a bag-forming tube.
The tube is a fixed size and needs to be changed for other flat bag widths. The tube of film is drawn through the machine by rubber belts at a steady rate. When the draw-down stops, the overlap of the film at the front of the filling tube is heat-sealed to create a tube of film. At the same time, the bottom of the film tube is also heat-sealed, leaving the top of the film tube open. If the machine is synchronised with a product feeder, the product is then deposited down the bag-forming tube into the bottom of the bag. The film draw-down then restarts to pull the film tube to the required length. When the film tube stops moving, the seal again come in to seal the front, bottom and top of the film tube. The top of the filled bag and the bottom of the empty tube are heat-sealed at this stage and a knife separates the filled bag from the tube.
These machines can utilise many eco-friendly films, being as green as possible. They can pack a range of products from electronic parts, and plastic parts to food products such as sugar, salt, legumes, rice, cereal, tea, coffee beans, ground coffee, irregular-sized food stuffs as well as creams and liquids. Each product type would require a separate product feeder. As the bags are produced from a continuous flat roll of packaging film, wastage is reduced and operational staff is reduced to a minimum.
